Interviewer: What first got you into music?
Lil Smoke: Well, when I was 15 I was placed in my first residential facility and I had a lot of time to think and write and I realized that making music made the time go a little faster.
Interviewer: Who or what inspired you to make music?
Lil Smoke: I have a couple of OG inspirations... Snoop, Easy E, and mobb deep are some of my favorites. As for new school inspiration I started rapping when YBN Nahmir and TayK first dropped so you can hear a lot of their influence in my older tracks. Juice wrld is a huge influence on my more melodic tracks and I crafted my lyricism around artists such as Joey badass, Kendrick and Cole.
Poverty also played a big role in inspiring me to want to start to make music to make it out.
Interviewer: What is your creative process like?
Lil Smoke: When I get an idea during the day for the first line of a song I immediately pull out my phone and put it in my notes. I’ll do this abt 3-4 times a day and work on the rest of those songs writing as I come up with lyrics or new ideas throughout the day.
Then when I have about 10-15 good songs I’ll start recording so I’ll usually have a good week of writing then a week of recording and I just keep doing that.
Interviewer: Has your musical journey had a deliberate direction?
Lil Smoke: Yes. Everything I do is for a reason and I’d like to incorporate that into my craft. I want to be able to tell a story with the projects I put out.
Interviewer: What is your biggest musical challenge?
Lil Smoke: My anxiety and depression has always created a very large road block in my life. While it becomes hard at times to work or even get out of bed it seems the more I get my feelings out on paper the more this is a non issue.
Interviewer: What would you be doing right now if it wasn’t for your music career?
Lil Smoke: To be honest I don’t really know. As a teenager I didn’t have an outlet to get out my sadness and frustrations so music has been a way for me to vent. Also when I may have been doing something that could have got me in trouble I always talk myself into writing instead. The combination of these two aspects probably kept me out of a lot of detrimental situations.
Interviewer: How do you feel the internet has impacted the music business?
Lil Smoke: The internet is probably the easiest way to market yourself. If you have a problem picking up some Clout in today’s society than your not tying hard enough. With apps like Instagram, TicTok and various streaming platforms it’s easier than ever to gain some traction as long as you got some real talent behind it.
Interviewer: If you were talking to a younger version of you, what advice would you give yourself?
Lil Smoke: When I was a teenager I was in and out of residential facilities from 14 to almost 17 years old and on juvenile probation for 6 years straight. If anything I would just tell myself to mature a lot faster and stay outta trouble cuz nothing I was getting into was worth it I coulda been putting my mind to something better like writing before I got locked up and woulda been able to enjoy my childhood at the same time. That’s also my message to all the kids out there man, stay in school, get a education, fuck college start a corporation you feel? Invest.
Interviewer: If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
Lil Smoke: I don’t really like how labels take advantage of artists. In the future I would prefer to remain independent unless a really great deal came along because when you look at someone like Nipsey Hustle who owned every master, every royalty, etc. his family’s gonna be set for life. We needa break the stigma that the only way to get into the music industry is to sign your life away.
Interviewer: What’s next for you?
Lil Smoke: I have an album releasing this summer entitled HPPD and then back to the writing phase. This winter a few more singles then I got sum secrets to planned for next year ;)
My first project HPPD is a 13 track album that will be releasing within the next few weeks on all platforms. Music videos are pending but I’m almost 100% some very cool visuals will be incorporated as the album is psychedelic based. I also just dropped a song off the album entitled PÊRFËÇT out now on all platforms.
If you’d like to follow me on IG my handle is @lil.smoke.tcg
I will also be dropping a clothing store upon release of the album and the handle to the store page is @explorebysmoke if you would like to check that out as well.
